CROPS STATUS  (July 17, 2010)
We normally sell only from our own production. The status of our crops is dependent on weather and other aspects of the will of God. We help where we can!

STRAWBERRIES - We have had a very good crop of strawberries in 2010.  Of course that harvest season runs in April and May for our climate.  We thank one and all for helping us enjoy the exceptional flavor of field ripened and truly fresh strawberries. Our plants for the 2011 season have been ordered for an October planting.  As a matter of interest, those plants are just little-bitty fellers growing on Prince Edward Island in Canada.  In time they will be sent to a nursery in VA where they will be grown to tansplantable size.  From there our 15,000 plants will be shipped by motor freight (in the company of about 50,000 plants for our friends in Marble Falls) to be grown and fruited in our fields in Texas.

Blackberries - Our blackberries have played out. I am convinced that when temperatures get up, to about 100 F trying to keep blackberries producing is nearly impossible.

Peaches -  It has been so many years since we had a good peach crop that I scarceky knew how to act. Well, I knew how to act, but I didn't always do it.  The bugs got more fruit than their share.  As a matter of fact, the grasshoppers are still dealing me misery.  Nonetheless, we still have some nice fruit and should have it at least through the end of the month of July.

Plums - We had a world of plums, but their season has passed for 2010.

                                          VEGETABLES

Blackeyed Peas - The rains for which we were hoping and praying have come!  We now have the prettiest plants you ever saw.  The older plants have started flowering again, and we expecvt to start harvesting next Tuesday. The later planting is growing like 60, but no flowers yet. .

Cantaloupe and Watermelons - We are still harvesting cantaloupe.  Warm weather is good for the melons, improves the sugar content and the flavor.

Okra - Not much has changed. Mary has given me a lot of grief for neglecting the okra. It is coming along - but slowly.

Tomatoes - We are still having to buy some tomatoes from a neighbor.  He is close by and does a terrific job with most crops.

Other - We have most of the other summer vegetables in good supply.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO I POSTED A FINAL SCORE: GRASSHOPPER 23 & FARMERS 0. THIS YEAR MAY BE WORSE!.!
